Where does Granola come from?

Granola has been around for a long time & is eaten worldwide. It is an excellent source of fiber, nutrients and carbs. It was originally invented in 1863 by Dr. James Jackson and later produced & sold by Dr. John Hervey Kellogg. most commonly known today as Kellogg’s (yes, Kellogg’s were the first official sellers of Granola & Muesli).

Where does the name Granola come from?

It originally was called Granular, most probably due to its granular size and appearance. This name was trademarked by Dr. James Jackson. When Dr. Kellogg wanted to mass produce Granola, he changed the name slightly to the name we all know ‘Granola’, so there wouldn’t be any trademark infringement.

Is gluten free granola actually healthy?

In moderate amounts, Granola is very healthy and an excellent well rounded meal. It contains a diverse range of carbs, protein, vitamins & healthy fats. Gluten free granola is the healthier option with added ingredients such as nuts, seeds, dried fruit & generally, higher quality ingredients. Our Crumble GF granola/muesli also contains essential nutrients like iron, magnesium and vitamin E.

What is the difference between muesli and Granola?

Like everyone else in the whole world, who actually knows the difference between muesli and granola? Well the difference is actually very simple and irrelevant. Granola has oats that aren’t toasted, while muesli contains oats that are toasted (mind blowing information? Yes!).

Are oats gluten free?

Oats are a main ingredient in granola and Muesli. They provide a great source of fiber, protein & carbs but are they gluten free?

Short answer: Yes.

Long Answer: Yes, but they are often grown alongside gluten containing grains, such as rye, wheat & barley. This could lead to cross contamination in the farming, packaging or processing. To avoid this issue you can get our certified gluten free, organic oats HERE.

Where can you get certified gluten free oats?

Getting gluten free oats has never been easier, you can simply shop for our freee range (all freee products are certified organic and GF free). Our porridge oats are certified organic, vegan & certified gluten freee. They are the highest quality gluten free rolled oats on the market. Our oats can be used for delicious porridge or for your everyday cooking and baking.

Why was gluten free granola invented?

Similar to many other gluten free products, it was invented out of necessity.

In the 1940’s Dr. Willem Dicke made the discovery that wheat was triggering people with celiac disease and later made the discovery that gluten was the culprit, implying they had a gluten intolerance.

This meant that people who had negative reactions to gluten, had to find a way to eat their favorite foods without causing a reaction. We have come a very long way since then. Now, GF products are widely available and are thoroughly loved & perfected. Like our little bakery, Crumble GF, is 100% gluten free and has vegan and sugar free options as well.

What is in gluten free Granola?

Well it really depends from brand to brand but most contain oats, nuts, puffed rice & dried fruit. We believe we have perfected the gluten free granola, ours containing the perfect combination of:

  • Toasted oats
  • Walnuts
  • Shaved Coconut
  • Puffed GF rice
  • Coconut sugar
  • Cinnamon

If you are making GF granola/muesli at home, you can add a wide range of ingredients. Such as pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, olive oil & fresh fruit, ultimately removing processed foods (similar to our GF muesli and granola).

Our other perfected GF Granola contains coconut oil, golden syrup, peanut butter, vanilla & other delicious flavors. You can see all our different granola and muesli HERE.
